An open letter to prospective rowers...

Dear prospective rower:

Greetings from Malta Boat Club! We are writing you regarding rowing with Malta Boat Club as a lightweight sculler this summer. Located in Philadelphia, we are looking for hardworking, dedicated athletes seeking to improve their skills, and fitness, while competing throughout this coming summer season. Sculling experience is not necessary, as long as you have a minimum of one year’s rowing experience.

Malta has a storied history of competing in lightweight sculling events and performing very well. Our website, will soon list some of our many accomplishments, along with many other notable facts about the club. Last year we had four club members representing the United States, on both the senior and under-23 national teams, in various lightweight sculling events. It was through their own hard work and the coaching they received at Malta that helped propel them to the highest level of competition. While not everyone can earn a spot on the team, there are plenty of other opportunities for success in summer rowing. Many collegiate athletes have come away from our program with much better boat handling skills as a result of working in our small boats. We offer individualized instruction in a fun, yet competitive environment.

Our program will officially begin June 8th, the Tuesday following the IRA regatta. If you are not competing in it, there will opportunity to begin practicing sooner. Our race schedule for the summer season includes participation in the Independence Day Regatta, USRowing Club Nationals in Oak Ridge, TN, and Canadian Henley, located in St. Catharines, ON. The price for a summer membership is $475. This includes a year-long membership to the club and a unisuit. The club covers the entry fees for all regattas; you will be responsible for your own food and lodging at Nationals and Henley.

Whether you are an elite oarsman getting ready to enter your senior year, or a beginner just finished with your first year, we believe that we can help you reach your full potential. Many of our previous athletes have used the summer program to keep in shape and gain experience. These experiences have resulted in jumps from the freshmen eight to the 1V. If you are serious about improving your rowing and want to be the best that you can on the water, then Malta is the place for you. Please contact us to find out more or see our online application.

Best,
